30.6 % CO2 savings by 2030
Determining emissions alone is not enough to contribute to compliance with the Paris Agreement and thus limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C. To do this, it is necessary to derive a reduction strategy from the CO2 balance, define reduction measures and implement these consistently.
We have therefore identified possible CO2 reduction potentials for A.S. Création. When determining the reduction potential, each individual emissions category of our carbon footprint was analysed separately. This investigation was based on internal analyses, supplier surveys and the evaluation of scientific sources. A 10-year period was set as the target horizon, from the starting year 2020 to the target year 2030.
As the company's emissions are heavily dependent on production volumes, the absolute level of total emissions is not a suitable target figure. For this reason, the relative indicator was formed, which sets the absolute emissions in relation to the quantity of wallpaper rolls produced in the so-called "Euro roll size" (10.05 m long and 0.53 m wide). This ensures the comparability of the results over time and provides an honest picture of the actual reductions.
A.S. Création has therefore set itself the following CO2 reduction target:
The CO2 emissions (Scopes 1 - 3) of A.S. Création Tapeten AG are to be reduced by 30.6% from 5.65 kg CO2 per euro roll in 2020 to 3.92 kg CO2 per euro roll in 2030.
As a continuous linear reduction cannot be assumed, A.S. Création has set a reduction corridor of +-20% within which the annual results may move.
A comparison of the target with the targets of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) shows that our target is within the corridor recommended by the SBTi for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
From 2020 to 2023, CO2 emissions per euro roll were reduced by 8.2% overall. In order to achieve the reduction target set for 2030, a further reduction of 22.5 percentage points must be realised.
In Scope 1 and 2 (energy-related emissions), the key figure rises by 3.7% from 0.54 kg CO2e per euroroll in the previous year to 0.56 kg CO2e per euroroll in 2023. This deterioration is due to the negative effects of the restructuring measures in production.
In Scope 3, in which all upstream and downstream emissions are accounted for, the key figure rose by 0.7% in 2023 from 4.60 kg CO2e per euroroll to 4.63 kg CO2e per euroroll. This deterioration is primarily due to the deterioration in the reject rate, as more raw material had to be used in percentage terms in 2023 to produce a saleable roll of wallpaper.
